City of Brea COVID-19 Community Update April 30, 2020

Brea’s Response to Governor Newsom’s Resilience Roadmap and Orange County’s Business Guidelines

Earlier this week, Governor Newsom announced Resilience Roadmap Stages that emphasize safety and preparedness to work toward modifying the State’s Stay-At-Home order and opening the economy. These modifications are based on science, health, and data and will happen in 4 stages. The Governor stated that California is currently in Stage 1 and non-essential business may not re-open at this time.
 
The County of Orange Board of Supervisors also released business guidelines which has led to confusion as to whether non-essential businesses are allowed to open now. Non-essential businesses are to remain closed per the Governor’s order. Brea is dedicated to the eventual re-opening of businesses in order to revitalize the economy and get residents back to work. At the same time, we are committed to doing so without putting the community at risk.
 
The City of Brea remains vigilant in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Complaints of non-essential businesses opening in Brea are being received and investigated to ensure compliance. We understand businesses are eager to open, but that will not occur until the Governor begins to lift the Stay-at-Home order. Cities and Counties do not have the authority to supersede the State’s more restrictive orders. In Brea, we are closely following the Governor’s four-stage roadmap for re-opening non-essential business which has not yet occurred.

Governor Newsom Directs a Closure of Orange County Beaches and Provides Updated Recreational Activity Guidance

Today, Governor Newsom directed a closure of all Orange County beaches. This occurred as a result of Governor Newsom’s indication that social distancing did not properly occur at Orange County beaches last weekend. He assured California residents that there are still 200 parks open throughout the State, which are available to use so long as individuals follow physical distancing protocol. 
 
Brea’s parks and trails remain open to the public so long as proper social distancing and safety protocols are followed. Please note, amenities, such as playgrounds, picnic shelters, sports courts, fitness equipment and skate parks, remained closed at these Brea sites.
 
On their website, the State has issued modifications to the Governor’s Stay-at-Home order, particularly as they relate to recreational activities. The State encourages residents to go outside to go for a walk, to exercise, and participate in healthy activities as long as individuals maintain a safe physical distance of six feet and gather only with members of one’s household. Brea Senior Center Receives Generous Donations

This week, the Brea Senior Center experienced their single largest food distribution day since responding to COVID-19, seeing an increase over 50% from the previous week. A total of 569 meals and 52 grocery boxes were distributed. The Center also received 22 new intake registrations.
 
The Center continues to receive generous donations from businesses and community partners. This week, Senator Ling Ling Chang donated 12 Elderly Care Packages to our Brea seniors. These generous donations of supplies will assist our most vulnerable clients in our Case Management program. Thanks to Senator Chang’s office for previous large donations of packaged bread products that were distributed to our seniors in former weeks as well.
 
Islands Restaurant in Brea has donated 220 fresh meals to our Senior Center over the past three weeks. Their generosity has supported our home-bound and vulnerable senior population during this time, when their food access is limited. Earlier this week, the Brea Senior Center received a generous donation of 300 cookies from Brookdale Brea. The cookies were delivered to those picking-up and receiving daily meals and delivered to seniors who are part of our Home Delivered Meals program. The Brea Senior Center and the clients they serve are grateful for the community support.

Californians working in essential sectors during the coronavirus (COVID-19) response need safe, reliable, and accessible child care options. MyChildCare.ca.gov provides an interactive map of qualified licensed child care providers near you. The tool is available in English and Spanish.

Orange County Health Care Agency Information

As of today, there has been a cumulative total of 20 Brea residents who have tested positive for COVID-19. According to County statistics, there have been a total of 2,393 confirmed COVID-19 cases county-wide, 190 currently hospitalized and 45 unfortunate deaths. California’s COVID-19 Data Portal

The State has launched a user-friendly data portal available here that tracks COVID-19 cases statewide and by county, gender, age and ethnicity. The portal also outlines statewide hospitalizations and testing efforts. The data presented on the portal will be updated daily and will include additional information as it is available.
