Online Universal Classes

Orange County residents, who hold a library card membership with an OC Public Library, can take advantage of free online continuing education classes. Offered by the OC Public Library, Universal Class provides over 500 free online classes in a variety of subjects for job training, professional skills, computer skills, personal enrichment, academics, and hobbies. Online and video formats are available, and CE certificates are available upon completion.

OC Public Libraries also offer the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate through Career Online High School, part of the world's first accredited, private online school district. Career Online High School is specifically designed to reengage adults into the education system and prepare them for entry into post-secondary career education or the workforce. Classes are supported by board-certified instructors and students have 24/7 access to the online learning platform. Coursework begins in one of eight high-growth, high-demand career fields, before progressing to the core academic subjects. Many students are able to graduate in as few as four to six months by transferring in previously earned high school credits.

Spring Showers Causes Increase
in Mosquito Sources

Warmer weather on the horizon combined with recent heavy rain can create the perfect environment for mosquito breeding. The OC Mosquito and Vector Control District urges residents to regularly inspect their property for any stagnant water that can contribute to an increase in mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes can complete their life cycle from egg to adult in about a week and only need a bottle cap full of water to develop. Common sources for mosquito breeding include plant saucers, buckets, tires, pet water bowls, trash cans, and landscaping with low lying areas. Areas of collected water should be emptied or drained, containers should be tightly sealed to prevent mosquito entry, unnecessary containers should be removed from yards, and green unmaintained pools should be cleaned.

Water Conservation Landscape

New Watering Schedule Begins
April 1

Orange County has thankfully received some much needed rain this season. However, because of Southern California's Mediterranean climate, we still must remain vigilant about water conservation. The City of Brea water ordinance was enacted in 2009 to promote water conservation. It outlines rules for using water year round.

Beginning April 1, you may water your landscape on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays for up to 15 minutes. Spring is a great time to take a look at making water saving changes in the yard. There are many resources online to help plant a California-friendly landscape and choose a smart irrigation controller that will save water and money. Visit OCWaterSmart.com for water saving tips.

Compost Giveaway

Compost Giveaway

The City of Brea and Republic Services will be giving away compost for FREE on Saturday, April 20, from 8 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at Tri City Park, 2301 N Kraemer Blvd. Placentia. Please bring your own containers to fill (no bags). There is a limit of 60 gallons per household, while supplies last.

Compost creates healthier soil by adding organic matter and improving soil structure. Healthy soil uses water more efficiently, allowing available water to flow toward your plants' roots, storing water in the soil longer, and reducing runoff and erosion.

To receive free compost, residents must provide proof of residency (California driver's license or utility bill). Contact Republic Services at (714)-238-2444 for details.
