brea fest

Brea Fest Reimagined This Year

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our traditional Brea Fest celebration will look different this year. In lieu of the typical community celebration, we are taking the time to thank the restaurants and sponsors that have supported Brea Fest throughout the years. For eight weeks, beginning on Friday, August 14, the City will be highlighting different restaurants and sponsors via social media that have championed our efforts to highlight the arts here in Brea. Join us in this “thank you” by supporting our local restaurants for take-out or outdoor dining. Make sure to follow Brea Special Events and the City of Brea on social media to see our Brea Fest “thank you’s.”

Outdoor Services

Temporary Use Permits Now Available for Some Outdoor Services

In response to restrictions and modifications currently in place for many businesses, the Brea City Council has authorized the use of CARES Act Funding to help Brea businesses offset the costs associated with the Temporary Use Permit process for outdoor services. To support local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, the City began relaxing outdoor dining regulations and has now extended it to include additional businesses. Impacted businesses should contact the City's Planning Division at 714-990-7674, or visit bebrea.com, for more details and the application packet.

Pub Works

Street, Water, and Sewer Improvements to begin Mid-August for the North Hills West and East Tract Subdivision

Construction work begins in mid-August to replace the existing water mains, water services lines, a sewer main, and complete pavement rehabilitation on various streets within the North Hills West and East Tract Subdivision. Residents adjacent to these areas may require intermittent water service interruption in order to install the new water service connection. Additionally, there will be heavy construction activities, during daytime hours, which will require traffic control to be set-up during the construction, which may delay commutes through the construction zone.  The City’s contractor will provide additional notices and signage throughout the project. The project is expected to be completed during the spring of 2021, weather permitting. Visit cityofbrea.net/cipprojects for more information.

Vector Mosquito

First West Nile Virus Positive Mosquitoes Confirmed in Orange County

The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed that mosquito samples in three cities have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). These are the first samples to test positive in the county this year. The positive mosquitoes were collected on July 7 in the cities of Cypress and Garden Grove. The District has also confirmed that one dead bird with West Nile Virus was collected in Irvine.

West Nile Virus is most commonly spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. There are no confirmed cases of human infections currently in Orange County.

Mosquito control is a shared responsibility. Do your part to control mosquito breeding around your property and prevent bites. Eliminating mosquito breeding sources is critical to preventing the spread of West Nile Virus. To prevent mosquito bites, take action and follow these tips:

• Dump and drain containers filled with water at least once a week
• Clean and scrub bird baths and pet water bowls weekly
• Dump water from potted plant saucers

For more information, contact the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District at 714-971-2421 or visit ocvector.org.

Fire Safety

Home Fire Safety Checklist

There are simple steps to follow to make your home fire safe. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Clean roofs and gutters of dead leaves, debris and pine needles that could catch embers.
  • Replace or repair any loose or missing shingles or roof tiles to prevent ember penetration.
  • Reduce embers that could pass through vents in the eaves by installing 1/8 inch metal mesh screening.
  • Clean debris from exterior attic vents and install 1/8 inch metal mesh screening to reduce embers.
  • Repair or replace damaged or loose window screens and any broken windows.
  • Screen, or box-in, areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent debris and combustible materials from accumulating.
  • Move any flammable material away from wall exteriors — mulch, flammable plants, leaves and needles, firewood piles — anything that can burn. Remove anything stored underneath decks or porches.

Visit firewise.org for more information.

Brea PD

Brea Police Department Reminds
You to Lock It, Take It, Keep It

Theft from your vehicle is frustrating, to say the least. Make sure you are doing your part to try and prevent this crime from happening to you.

  • Remove belongings from your car. Don’t cover your valuables with a sweater or leave it in the center console.
  • Lock your car. Don’t give criminals the opportunity to take your things or go through your car by leaving your car unlocked.
  • Then, double check that you locked your car by lifting the door handles.

Remember, if you see something, say something!
