Wildcatters Dog Park

Dog Park, Skate Parks and
Sport Courts Reopen

Last week, Wildcatters Dog Park, Arovista Skate Park, Olinda Ranch Skate Park and Sport Courts (basketball, tennis) reopened to the public for individual recreation. All parks and trails in Brea have been open for households to take a walk, run, or dog walk. We encourage the community to continue enjoying recreational spaces responsibly and maintain at least 6 feet of physical distance from those living outside their households. Group organized sports are still not allowed at any park in Brea. Park amenities, such as drinking fountains, fitness equipment, picnic shelters and playgrounds, remain closed. Click here to see a list of City facilities and parks that are open and closed.

Parking Enforcement

Parking Enforcement Resumes July 1

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to accommodate more vehicles needing to park on City streets, overnight parking enforcement was suspended in mid-March. Beginning July 1, the Brea Police Department will resume all parking enforcement duties. This includes the enforcement of overnight parking. Please make sure your overnight parking permit(s) has been renewed for this year, or you apply for any additional ones needed.

2020 Parking permits are currently available for $20 (online). Click here to purchase a permit online. For assistance with purchasing a permit online, please call 714-671-4406.

NOTE:  The permit sticker is removable and can be used on any of the passenger vehicles listed in your account.  It is to be placed inside the windshield on the lower left driver’s side.

Construction

Public Works' Project Updates

Street and Water Improvements on Puente Street

On June 1, a Capital Improvement Project began to replace the existing water mains, water services lines, and complete pavement rehabilitation along Puente St from Briarwood Dr to Lambert Rd and on Gemini Ave and Titan Way. Residents adjacent to these areas may require water service interruption in order to install the new water service connection. Heavy construction activities are occurring during daytime hours, which require traffic control to be set-up during the construction, and may delay commutes through the construction zone.

The City’s contractor, Stephen Doreck Equipment Rentals, Inc., will provide additional notices and signage throughout the project with respect to driveway access and temporary water service disruption to complete the necessary new water connection.

The project will be completed in two main phases. Phase 1 will include the construction of the new water mains and services, and Phase 2 will include the pavement rehabilitation work. This project is anticipated to be completed by January 2021. The City appreciates your patience and cooperation during this improvement project.

Eagle Hills Water Main Replacement Project

On June 15, the Eagle Hills Water Main Replacement Project will begin. The project is located in the residential tract of Eagle Hills, bounded between Lambert Rd and Birch St. The project will have various lane closures but will allow all access during the entire time of the project. Several project information boards will be posted near the project entry points to inform the public of the upcoming work. Notices have been delivered to the affected residents. The project is estimated to be complete by November 2020, weather permitting.

Please visit cityofbrea.net/cipprojects for more information on these projects.

Senior Center Donations

Senior Center Provides Essential Nutrition Resources During
COVID-19 Pandemic

City staff continues to provide essential resources, meals, groceries, and supplies to the senior community while the Brea Senior Center remains closed to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Numerous City staff from the Community Services Department have stepped in to cover essential services such as home delivered meals, wellness calls, food packing, meal distributions, and daily phone resources out of the senior center.  During the last two months of the closure period, the senior center has seen several significant increases in nutrition services, including:

• 12,653 meals have been distributed during the center’s closure, an increase of 197% over the same time period before the closure

• Staff distributes an average of 296 meals each day during the closure, which is an increase of 184% over the same time period before the closure

• 215 new individuals registered for nutrition services during the closure, which is an increase of 312% over the same time period before the closure

Staff has also started making special deliveries to seniors in Brea who don’t have transportation options to get to the senior center.  Deliveries include: non-perishable food boxes from Second Harvest Food Bank; packs of La Brea Bakery bread; meal sets from Meals on Wheels and Islands Restaurant meals; as well as paper towels and toilet paper supplies.

COVID Test

COVID-19 Testing in Orange County

County residents have several COVID-19 testing options. Tests are available through private labs and doctors’ offices, and there are several County of Orange and State of California sites. The County currently has 14 sites contracted for testing those who are symptomatic. The State has four testing sites available for essential workers and others who are asymptomatic, but have been exposed to the virus and can’t get a test from their doctor. Visit cityofbrea.net/covid19 to view a list of testing sites.

Recycle used Oil

County of Orange Regional Used
Oil Recycling Program

The Regional Used Oil Recycling Program encourages the public to recycle their used oil and oil filters at one of the many CalRecycle Certified Used Oil Collection Centers throughout Orange County. All Certified Centers will accept uncontaminated used oil from the public absolutely free during normal business hours.

Be sure to drain oil into a clean container with a tight fitting lid. Also, remember to bring used oil filters for recycling, too. Many Certified Centers are now accepting used filters. They are your local auto parts stores and service centers such as AutoZone, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Pep Boys, Jiffy Lube, Valvoline Instant Oil Change or one of over 200 other businesses in Orange County.

There is no I.D. or paperwork required to participate. Please take advantage of this free program. For more information, visit ocusedoil.com.

Landscape

MWDOC Turf Removal Program

Rebates for the popular Municipal Water District of Orange County’s (MWDOC) Turf Removal Program are still available for $3 per square foot of turf grass removed and replaced with climate-appropriate landscape. The program is available for both residents and businesses throughout Orange County with a cap of 5,000 and 50,000 square feet respectively. Projects with areas where plants and permeable landscape will be exchanged for turf may only include live plant material. Artificial grass does not qualify for the rebate program.

Since the MWDOC Turf Removal Program launched in 2010, 22.4 million square feet of turf grass has been removed, saving Orange County 1.32 billion gallons of water to date. Orange County residents and businesses have learned that 50-70% of total water consumed is used outdoors, and by replacing thirsty turf with smart irrigation equipment and plants that thrive in Southern California’s semi-arid climate, that number can be cut in half.

Funding for the Turf Removal Program is provided through a partnership with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, United States Bureau of Reclamation, and Department of Water Resources, and is expected to continue through 2020. Rebates are subject to availability, and projects will be approved on a first-come, first-served basis.
To learn more, and to determine eligibility, visit mwdoc.com/turfremoval, or call (714) 593-5036 to speak with a MWDOC representative.
