Get a close-up look at police work during the 2018 Citizen Academy presented by the Brea Police Department. The free 10-week course begins on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 6 - 9 p.m. and continues on Wednesdays through March 21. Classes will be held at the Brea Civic & Cultural Center. To be considered, applications need to be received by Friday, December 1, 2017.
The Citizens Academy is designed to give participants a better understanding of the challenges inherent with modern police work. All those who attend the entire course will receive a certificate upon its completion. Many graduates of this program have continued to serve in volunteer capacities, as well as pursue a career in law enforcement.
Members of the Brea Police Department serve as the instructors for topics, which include:
- What a Patrol Officer, Detective and Traffic Officer does
- Police Firearms and Defensive Weapons
- SWAT Team
- The History of the Police Department
- Public Perception of Law Enforcement
- Officer Safety Tactics
- K-9 Demonstration
- Ride-along with a Patrol Officer, and much more
There is no charge to attend these comprehensive classes. An application is required and a limited background check will be conducted prior to acceptance into the program due to the sensitive nature of some of the information that is presented. All applications need to be received by Friday, December 1, 2017. Acceptance into the Citizen’s Academy is on a first-come, first served basis with those who reside or work in Brea receiving priority.
