Trauma Intervention Program

The Trauma Intervention Program, commonly known as TIP, is a group of specially trained volunteers who provide emotional aid and practical support to victims of traumatic events and their families in the first few hours following a tragedy. Founded in 1985 by Mr. Wayne Fortin, a licensed mental health professional, TIP has grown rapidly and consist of 18 regional Chapters. One of these regional chapters, the Orange County Chapter of TIP Inc., was founded in 1995. They currently serve over 20 jurisdictions, 10 hospitals, and 10 public safety agencies, including the Brea Police Department.

In Brea and cities throughout Orange County, police officers and other emergency responders rely on assistance from TIP volunteers to provide vital, immediate, and emotional support to trauma victims and their families. TIP volunteers are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are called by police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and hospital personnel to assist:

  • Family members and friends following a natural or unexpected death
  • Victims of violent crime including rape, assault, robbery, or burglary
  • Victims of fire
  • Disoriented or lonely elderly persons
  • People involved in motor vehicle accidents
  • People who are distraught and seeking immediate support
  • Survivors of suicide

TIP is also available to the public for TELE-TIP telephone interventions. If you need a remote early intervention session, please call TIP Dispatch at (949) 614-6333. Additional resources for those grieving over the loss of a loved one can be be found here.

Pay it Forward Patrol

TIP volunteers and the Brea Police Department have collaborated in the past for community outreach events. Their most recent community event, known as Pay it Forward Patrol, strengthens the bond between Brea patrol officers and community members. Community members are spontaneously surprised by officers during the holiday season with donations provided by an anonymous local business. Make sure to follow us on our social media pages to witness the holiday cheer!
