The Federal Bureau of Investigations National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) was implemented to improve the overall quality of crime data collected by law enforcement. NIBRS captures details on each single crime incident, including information on victims, known offenders, relationships between victims and offenders, arrestees, and property involved in crime.

Group A Offenses
As defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), Group A offenses include:
- Crimes Against Persons
- Murder, manslaughter, homicide, non-consensual (rape, etc.) and consensual sex offenses (incest, etc.), assault offenses, kidnapping/abduction, and human trafficking.
- Crimes Against Property
- Robbery, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, destruction/damage/vandalism of property, counterfeiting/forgery, fraud, embezzlement, extortion/blackmail, bribery, and stolen property offenses.
- Crimes Against Society
- Narcotics, gambling, pornography/obscene material, prostitution, weapon law violations, and animal cruelty.
Group B Offenses
Group B Offenses are all other crimes, including DUI, loitering, and trespassing, among others.
