Green Life, Green Brea Awards
The Brea City Council awarded the first Green Life, Green Brea award to Beckman Coulter for its sustainable renovation of its longtime Brea facility.
The Green Life, Green Brea award recognizes Brea businesses and organizations for exemplary achievement in energy and water conservation, and other measures showing a high level of environmental stewardship.
Beckman Coulter’s comprehensive facility renovation achieved a Gold LEED Certification, which is an internationally recognized green building certification system. Beckman was able to reduce water usage by 40% in their remodel using indigenous drought tolerant plants, low flow faucets, and other water saving devices.
This one-year phased project of roughly 500,000 square feet included extensive building modifications, lab facilities, office suites, site work, parking areas, and extensive security upgrades. Other features included the addition of new windows, new lobby upgrades, a new employee fitness area, and a café.
Assisting Beckman on the project was construction company, KPRS, also a Brea business and architect Gensler. Representatives from KPRS and Gensler also received special council recognition.
Representatives from Beckman Coulter received an original mosaic art piece commissioned by the City of Brea specifically for the Green Life, Green Brea award. Southern California artist Dawn Mendelson created the piece using her specialty style of mosaic featuring recycled materials. Her work for the City of Brea also includes collaboration with a fellow artist to create a sidewalk mosaic at City Hall Park.
About the Award
The City of Brea initiated this award to help promote, inspire, and recognize sustainable practices embraced by Brea businesses. Only the most innovative and ambitious environmental initiatives are destined to receive this distinction. By encouraging green thinking, recognizing such achievements, and being a leader in energy conservation, we believe more business will be inclined to go green to the benefit of the entire community.
The idea for the Green Life, Green Brea award originated in the city’s Energy Committee, a group of cross departmental city representatives evaluating ongoing energy-related projects and ideas.
