What is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is a system that allows a user to get automatic updates from web sites whenever new content or news is published on these sites. It acts like a personal web reader by checking your sites regularly for new content. If you set up an RSS feed from the Orange County Register Sports Section for example, you will be notified (through an RSS reader) whenever a new article is posted. The same thing will happen if you subscribe to one or more of the City of Brea RSS feeds, listed at the right.

 

How do I start using RSS Feeds?

To use a site's RSS feature, an RSS reader is required. An RSS reader manages all of the feeds you pick from various websites—allowing you to easily keep track of news and information from your favorite websites.

If you don’t have an RSS reader, you’ll need to choose one and install it. An internet search will return many free options. For web-based Readers, such as Google Reader, you must initially set up an account. Once you've chosen an RSS reader, follow the instructions to download, in-stall, and open the reader.

(Note: Some Internet browsers such as Firefox and Safari, will pick up RSS feeds without the need to set up an outside Reader. See below for more info.*)

City of BreaFeeds

To subscribe to City of Brea feeds, open your Reader and pick one or more feeds by clicking on the RSS link(s) to the right. Some Readers will automatically place the selected feed(s) on a list in your Reader. Alternatively, you may need to right click a RSS link, choose “copy shortcut,” and paste into your RSS Reader (choose the “Subscribe” option on your Reader page, and paste [“Control V”] the RSS link into the field provided.)

The desired feed will appear in the list in your RSS Reader. Once you set up the feeds, you’re set! Now via, the Reader, you will be alerted when a new article is posted from feeds you have selected.

Many people keep their Reader open while at the computer, so they can easily check for new alerts. However, you decide to manage your RSS feeds, the City of Brea hopes you’ll find this new feature an easy way to stay updated on what’s happening in Brea.
