How to File A Police Report
The Brea Police Department services two cities, Brea and Yorba Linda, and primarily documents those specific incidents which occurred in these cities. If you're a resident of Brea or Yorba Linda, an officer will respond to your home. If you are not a resident or would rather not have an officer at your home, you may come to the Brea Police Department or Yorba Linda police administrative office to file a report.
How to Obtain A Copy of A Police Report
Copies of reports are not randomly released to the general public. The criteria to be met: 1) A named victim of a crime report or 2) A driver, registered owner of a vehicle, injured party, or property owner named in a collision report may purchase a copy of the report. A request will cost $3.00 cash or check payable to City of Brea, with mailing address of: Brea Police Department, 1 Civic Center Circle, Brea, CA, 92821, Attn: Records. A subject arrested will need to obtain a copy of his/her police report through the North Court District Attorney's office.
What to Do When Involved In An Traffic Accident
Check to see if anyone involved is injured, give first aid if necessary. Call the Police Department or have someone do it for you. If no one is injured, try to move the vehicles out of the road. If the vehicles are not driveable, walk to a position of safety and wait for the police to arrive.
Non-Injury Traffic Accident Information
It is necessary to notify your insurance agent immediately, regardless of who was at fault. If any person was injured or killed or any person's property was damaged in excess of $750.00, it is mandatory to complete a Department of Motor Vehicles SR-1 form within 10 days of the accident. If your agent requests a police report, you may contact the police department and complete a Delayed Collision Report form. This form is available to be downloaded (Click here to download this form - Non-injury delayed traffic collision). Mail or drop off the form at the Brea Police Department. A copy will be forwarded to the Traffic Division. In most cases, this report will be for your documentation purposes only. In the event of a hit-and-run collision where suspect information has been obtained, a police officer will take a report.
General Citation Information
Your signature on the bottom of the citation is your promise to appear on or before the assigned court date at the named court. North Justice Center generally mails a courtesy notice to recipients of traffic citations which list the fine(s) owed for the violation(s) and if you are eligible for Traffic School and/or dismissal of any violation(s); however, this is only a courtesy. The N.J.C. Traffic Division can be reached at 714-773-4555. Failure to appear and/or pay for your fines before the listed court date may result in the suspension of your driver's license and/or a warrant issued for your arrest.
Parking Citation Information
You must pay the fine or request an administrative review within 21 days of the issue date of the citation. The fine for the violation is listed on the front of the citation, with detailed information on how to process the citation listed on the bottom. Failure to comply with the instructions listed will result in an increase in the fine and ultimately a refusal by D.M.V. to renew your vehicle's registration.
Arrest Court Information
You must appear at the court designated on your citation on the appearance date and time given unless further notified by the court. Failure to appear may result in a warrant being issued for your arrest. The N.J.C. Criminal Division can be reached at 714-773-4668.
Vehicle Release Information
All vehicles require a release obtained from the front counter of the Brea Police Department, as well as a fee of $80.00 cash, credit cards, cashiers check or money order. Personal checks are not accepted. Vehicles are only released to the registered or legal owner(s) of the vehicle, and this person must have a valid driver's license. In the event the registered or legal owner does not possess a valid driver's license, a driver must be present who does have a valid driver's license. Once a release is obtained, contact the tow company for total storage fees and hours the vehicle may be retrieved from the tow yard. The primary tow company used is Brea Towing, 509 W. Lambert, Brea, 714-773-0100.
A vehicle impounded due to an unlicensed or suspended driver may be held for up to 30 days pursuant to Vehicle Code section 14602.6. However, the owner of the vehicle may request a hearing before a designated hearing officer at the Brea Police Department to determine if the vehicle should be held the full 30-day period. If the vehicle is released by the hearing officer, the owner will still be responsible for any fees incurred at both the police department and the tow company.
Transferring Vehicle OwnershipGo to the Department of Motor Vehicles and submit all applicable paperwork in order to transfer ownership of the vehicle into your name. Vehicles will only be released to the registered or legal owner(s). A bill of sale, pink slip, or title may be presented to the Brea Police Department as proof of ownership for new vehicles.
