Brea Awarded Cool Planet from Climate Registry

Recognizing City Leadership

The City of Brea was recognized by the Climate Registry as a government and institutional sector winner of the Cool Planet Award. An award presentation during the September 18, 2012 Brea City Council meeting featured congratulatory remarks from Southern California Edison, the Community Energy Partnership, and the Climate Registry.

The City of Brea, along with Marriott International, Eastern Municipal Water District, and Northrop Grumman Corporation, were recognized for outstanding efforts to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions. Each of the 2012 awardees have demonstrated leadership in adopting robust environmental measures as part of their operations.

For Brea, a comprehensive energy efficiency and solar power project that came online in late 2011, has already resulted in over $400,000 of operational savings, plus a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Since then, the city has continued with additional projects to improve control and monitoring systems for energy use.

Brea has also encouraged the public to become more conservation minded through a continuing outreach known as the Mayor’s One-Ton Challenge.
